About Australia
Australia Today – A Brief Snapshot
Australia is a stable, democratic society with a skilled workforce and a strong, competitive economy. With a population of 20 million, Australia is the only nation to govern an entire continent and is the sixth largest country in the world in land area. Australia's multicultural society includes its Indigenous peoples and migrants from some 200 countries.
Australia has had one of the most outstanding economies of the world in recent years. As a high-growth, low-inflation, low interest rate economy, it is more vibrant than ever before. There is an efficient government sector, a flexible labour market and a very competitive business sector.
Muslims in Australia have a long and varied history that is thought to pre-date European settlements. Some of Australia’s earliest visitors were Muslims from the east Indonesian archipelago, which made contact with mainland Australia as early as the 16th - 17th centuries. Over 300,000 Muslims live in Australia, and there are over 100 mosques.
Australia has a vibrant and long-standing Arab Community, dating back to the arrival of Arab-speaking immigrants in 1870’s. Today’s Arab Community in Australia celebrates its diversity of religion, culture and ethic background. Arabic is widely spoken in Australia; it’s the fifth most spoken language after English. The Arab community is part of Australia’s culturally diverse, tolerant and inclusive society.
